Updated

This fall, Piccalio is honored to show up with a bed that fits elegantly into your home and bedtime routine. bedBED™ is a 2-in-1 toddler floor bed that flips, creating a big kid bed when the time is right.

Piccalio founders, Ali and Aneta, have been working on bringing this dream to life since 2022. In this interview, they share about the process of creating a quality toddler bed that grows with your child.

What inspired you to design a Montessori floor bed?

Ali and Aneta: We’ve long dreamed of creating a beautiful floor bed that grows with your child and surpasses the highest safety standards because we felt the market needed better options for parents who want to start their kids on the floor early. The available options were lacking in design, and very few met our certification standards.

Can you share some more about the process of creating bedBED™? How long has it taken?

Ali and Aneta: We started working on the design at the beginning of 2022. We sent the concept idea to our favorite designer, who also happens to be a mom who lives in Europe and practices Montessori with her own children. We knew she was the perfect person to tackle this design.

Finding the right manufacturing partner was key because making high-quality kids' beds is difficult and has to be done by the best in the industry. When we finally found our current manufacturer in Europe, it felt like the stars had aligned. We visited the factory in Latvia in the summer of 2022 and started prototyping in 2024. It took more than a year to fully develop the bed with the manufacturer and test to all our safety and sustainability standards.

Why did you choose to go with a floor bed frame design?

Ali and Aneta: We think using a floor bed is a personal parenting choice. We designed bedBED™ to give parents more options and flexibility as your child grows. You can use it as a Montessori floor bed or flip it for a big kid bed.

We’ve also created customization options so your child’s bed works for both your child and your parenting style. You can add our Headboard to protect your wall and serve as a nice backrest for reading bedtime stories. Gain peace of mind with our Safety Rail, which helps keep your little one in bed all night long (even if they seem to do gymnastics in their sleep). We also created a Book Hook to keep bedtime stories within easy reach.

We will offer bedBED™ in a full crib and twin size. If you go for a twin size, you could even use it as a guest bed.

What does the name bedBED™ mean?

Ali and Aneta: bedBED™ is more than a name; it tells a story of growing up and speaks to its 2-in-1 functionality. Lowercase “bed” is for little ones you want to keep closer to the floor for safety and independence. “BED” is just one flip away whenever your child is ready for a raised bed and big kid vibes.

How do you envision people using the bedBED™ in their homes?

Ali and Aneta: We hope they have a bedBED™ setup that suits them and their little one best—whether as a floor bed or a big kid bed. Every year, little ones spend up to 4,380 hours in bed, sleeping. They spend even more time in their beds playing, reading books, making shadow puppets, and asking for one last hug. We’re excited to provide a cozy, safe space for all these wonderful moments, both awake and asleep.

We also believe furniture should last, serving your family for many years. That’s why we made the twin-sized bedBED™ that you can use as a floor bed or raised bed, serving multiple purposes in your home. Use it for your child, house guests, and precious visits home from college.

What feature of bedBED™ do you love the most?

Ali and Aneta: What we love most is that this bed transitions as your child grows. Now that we are parents to an 8-month-old, she'll soon be transitioned from her crib to the Piccalio bedBED™ on the floor. We are looking forward to not having to buy her a new big kid bed after just a couple of years. Plus, we’re excited about the independence the floor bed offers and watching our daughter’s journey to the big kid BED.

We also love that we can have peace of mind about safety with this bed. Not only does it meet the highest structural safety standards, but it’s also safe for your home’s indoor air.

It’s so hard to pick just one thing we love about bedBED™ because we’re also excited about the Book Hook accessory. This beautiful metal hook gives convenient access to books for bedtime stories–even in small spaces. We can’t wait to use it.
