bedBED® Montessori Bed

A Montessori bed is a low-to-the-ground floor bed that fosters independence by allowing toddlers to get in and out 'all by myself.' We designed the bedBED® to grow with this milestone—starting as a safe, accessible 'bed' for early freedom, and flipping into a raised 'BED' when they’re ready for a big kid bed.

Most families introduce a Montessori floor bed once their child can crawl or walk independently. For the bedBED® Montessori Bed, Piccalio recommends use starting at 15 months and up for the full crib size, and 24 months and up for the twin size.

The floor-level design removes the need for climbing, which allows children to get into and out of bed safely and independently. Many families choose a floor bed during the toddler years because it supports autonomy while still accommodating growth into preschool and early childhood routines.

Readiness matters more than a specific age. Children who can move confidently and follow simple sleep routines tend to transition most smoothly.

Yes. The bedBED® is Greenguard Gold Certified and meets the strictest safety standards. When setting up your child’s Montessori floor bed, also consider taking some time to child-proof your child’s room. You can view our Safety & Certification page to see exactly how we test our furniture for your home.

Transitioning to a Montessori bed is similar to any change out of a crib or bassinet. One strategy is to set up the floor bed and leave the crib in the room at the same time. Then, ask your child where they want to sleep each night. After about a week of sleeping in the bed, you can remove the crib.

When transitioning to a floor bed, it can also be helpful to have your child practice getting in and out a few times. That way, they can get in and out independently with confidence.

If your child is old enough, you may also work with them to create a morning routine. Should they call for you to open their door? Can they get out and go get you? Should they read a book until you come for them? You can make a chart with pictures that show your child which activities they can do when they get up.

The decision to flip the bed from the floor bed to the big kid BED is a personal decision. Some children are ready when they’re 2 years old, while others may not be ready until they’re 3 or 4 years old. You may consider adding a Safety Rail when you make this transition so your child won’t roll out of bed.

Both a twin floor bed and a toddler floor bed offer advantages and drawbacks depending on your needs. Choosing the best one for your child and family depends on various factors such as the size of your child’s room, your child’s age, and more. While a toddler bed is cozier and fits better in a smaller space, a twin-sized bed is an investment that can last into your child’s teenage years. We design our Montessori floor beds to last through years of daily use, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Unlike inexpensive alternatives that may wear out or require accessory upgrades, we focus on durable materials and thoughtful construction that hold up across multiple stages of childhood. With our bedBED®, the value extends even further.

When your child is ready, the frame flips into a raised “big kid” bed—offering additional years of use without needing to purchase a completely new frame. That built-in transition allows families to move from floor-level independence to a more traditional sleep setup while keeping the same foundational piece. Over time, this adaptability can lower the overall cost per year of use compared to beds that wear out quickly or need to be replaced as children grow.

A Montessori floor bed encourages children to move in and out of bed on their own, which supports sleep independence and reduces power struggles around bedtime. By eliminating climbing barriers and elevated frames, floor beds help children feel more confident navigating their sleep space.

While some floor beds use full perimeter barriers, our bedBED® includes a removable Safety Rail—giving families flexibility as their child grows. Many families notice smoother bedtime routines and fewer night waking frustrations because the bed feels familiar, accessible, and integrated into the room’s normal environment. Designing a calm sleep space involves a clear floor area around the bed, soft lighting, and accessible storage for bedtime books or comfort items. Placing the bed where the child has an unobstructed path in and out also reinforces a predictable sleep rhythm, giving children a sense of agency over their bedtime routine. Many families pair the bed with organized storage to minimize clutter and help the child settle into sleep more easily.
