A Montessori bed is a low-to-the-ground floor bed that fosters independence by allowing toddlers to get in and out 'all by myself.' Most families introduce a Montessori floor bed once their child can crawl or walk independently. For the bedBED™ Montessori Bed, Piccalio recommends use starting at 15 months and up for the full crib size, and 24 months and up for the twin size.

The floor-level design removes the need for climbing, which allows children to get into and out of bed safely and independently. Many families choose a floor bed during the toddler years because it supports autonomy while still accommodating growth into preschool and early childhood routines.

Transitioning to a Montessori bed is similar to any change out of a crib or bassinet. One strategy is to set up the floor bed and leave the crib in the room at the same time. Then, ask your child where they want to sleep each night. After about a week of sleeping in the bed, you can remove the crib.
When transitioning to a floor bed, it can also be helpful to have your child practice getting in and out a few times. That way, they can get in and out independently with confidence.

If your child is old enough, you may also work with them to create a morning routine. Should they call for you to open their door? Can they get out and go get you? Should they read a book until you come for them? You can make a chart with pictures that show your child which activities they can do when they get up.

The decision to flip the bed from the floor bed to the big kid BED is a personal decision. Some children are ready when they’re 2 years old, while others may not be ready until they’re 3 or 4 years old. You may consider adding a Safety Rail when you make this transition so your child won’t roll out of bed.
