I learned the hard way that the best baby diapers are carefully created for babies' sensitive skin. When my daughter was a newborn, I used diapers that I had received as gifts. She got terrible, red, painful-looking rashes that made every diaper change torture. The ingredients in the diapers irritated her skin, which I soon discovered is very sensitive.

Diapers designed with your baby’s sensitive skin in mind are free of irritants like fragrances and plastics. Discover quality diaper options that don’t sacrifice function, comfort, or the future of the planet.

Cloth diapers are another excellent option for babies with sensitive skin. Some, like Esembly diapers, are made of organic cotton, a fabric ideal for sensitive skin. In addition to being gentle on your baby's skin, cloth diapers are also eco-friendly.

Cloth diapers can also help prepare your toddler for potty training. Because babies feel the sensation of being wet, this can help them learn when they need to use the toilet.

How to Choose the Best Baby Diapers for Sensitive Skin

If your baby also has sensitive skin like my daughter does (even now that she's out of diapers!), I sympathize. For our family, finding the best diapers and diapering products like baby wipes and diaper creams was a journey of trial and error. Fortunately, my youngest son benefited from my knowledge.

Today, there are many high-quality diapers for babies with sensitive skin. The options listed here are all eco-friendly disposable diapers that are also highly absorbent. They make it easy to get through real life without harming your baby's skin or the planet.

Checklist of What to Look for in Baby Diapers for Sensitive Skin

Researchers have noted that certain substances found in the average disposable diaper can cause rashes and discomfort. Fragrances, dyes, heavy metals, formaldehyde, plastics, and glues are among the most common culprits. So, what should you look for?

  • No fragrances which may be listed as parfum
  • Dye-free
  • Natural, plastic-free ingredients
  • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Certification
  • No chlorine bleaching. Ideally, diapers should use the TCF process.

Eco-friendly disposable diapers, including the brands on this list, avoid harmful chemicals that can harm your baby. You can check the package for ingredients to avoid items like parfum, preservatives, and dyes.

Certifications like OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 use third-party testing. OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 tests for over 1,000 harmful substances, including some that may irritate your baby's skin.

Cholrine and TCF vs. ECF

Why do diaper manufacturers use chlorine bleaching? Diapers made with plant-based materials use either the Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) or ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) process. What does that mean?

Eco-friendly baby diapers use wood pulp or bamboo pulp to absorb liquid. Many companies bleach this wood pulp in processes that use harmful chemicals like chlorine. TCF diapers don't use any chlorine for bleaching purposes. Instead, they use safer systems featuring peroxide or oxygen.

A popular alternative to TCF is the ECF process. This process uses chlorine dioxide, which is safer for the skin than chlorine. However, it may still have some harmful impacts on the planet. TCF is the highest standard and safest for your baby and the environment.

Preventing Diaper Rash with the Best Diapers

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), diaper rash is typically “irritant dermatitis.” One way to prevent diaper rash is with frequent diaper changes. Moisture from urine and stool can harm your baby’s skin. The AAP also recommends using simple, water-based wipes and fragrance-free butt creams

Also, keep your eye out for different types of rashes that may require treatment from your doctor. Sometimes, your baby may get a yeast or bacterial rash. You’ll need a medicated cream for these types of rashes.

An allergic rash may look slightly different than your average diaper rash. You may see raised bumps instead of general redness. If you suspect your baby has an allergy to an ingredient in your diapers, try switching brands for a few weeks. Wipes and diaper creams may also cause an allergy. So, if changing diaper brands doesn’t work, you may want to try switching creams or wipes as well.

Choosing the Best Baby Diapers for Your Family

Every baby and family is different. Choosing the best diapers for your baby will depend on your baby's needs, budget, and preferences. When purchasing diapers, be sure to check diaper sizing to find the best fit for your baby.
