If you’re looking for a recipe for toddlers, we’ve got you covered! Spending time in the kitchen with your little one will be a pleasure with these easy toddler meals. They're even healthy for your growing little one.

Tips for Making Healthy Toddler Meals

Before you start cooking, here are some tips for working with your toddler in the kitchen:

1. Make it fun! Invite your little one to do as much as they can. If you notice that your mini chef is getting frustrated, switch it up. Find alternatives such as inviting your child to arrange the food on a plate, asking them to set the table, or washing dishes.

2. Make your kitchen toddler-friendly. Use a kitchen helper tower so that your toddler can easily and safely work at the counter and access the sink. If your kitchen is smaller, opt for a foldable kitchen helper tower that you can tuck away when not in use.

3. Find toddler-friendly utensils and dishes. A wooden knife can be especially helpful for keeping your little one safe. You may also consider using dishes made of wood, metal, or plastic to avoid breaking dishes.

Healthy Toddler Meal Ideas

Are you ready to get started? Here are some fun recipes for toddlers that are perfect for a snack, light lunch, or supper:

1. Fun-Shaped Sandwiches

A twist on a regular sandwich, these sandwiches are fun, and perfectly sized for toddlers. Feel free to adjust the cookie cutters with the season to celebrate holidays in a fun way! Here’s how to do it:

Ingredients:

  • Sandwich bread
  • Sandwich fixings such as peanut butter (or another nut butter) and jelly or mayonnaise, ham, and cheese
  • Cookie cutters

Instructions:

  • Invite your child to get out two pieces of bread and prepare the sandwich.
  • Help your child use the cookie cutters to cut out pieces of their sandwich.
  • Arrange them on a plate.
  • Enjoy!

2. Child-friendly Charcuterie Board

Charcuterie boards are perfect for toddlers at dinner time or as a fun snack idea. They can graze, picking whatever bits and pieces they like best. Plus, charcuterie boards are the ultimate finger food, giving toddlers the occasion to forgo a spoon. Here’s how to make a child-friendly charcuterie board:

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cucumber
  • Cheese (could be cheese sticks)
  • Cold cuts (alternatively, add a small bowl of hummus or refried beans)
  • Crackers
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Baby carrots
  • Olives
  • Anything else you’d like to add!

Instructions:

  • Wash and peel the cucumber. Then, invite your toddler to cut it into slices.
  • Invite your little one to cut the cheese into cubes or chunks.
  • Ask your child to cut the cold cuts into smaller squares (about the size that would fit nicely on a cracker).
  • Arrange the food on a large wooden board or tray. Add the crackers, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, olives, and anything else you’d like to add.

3. Creamy Soup

Blending up green vegetables into a creamy soup is a surefire way to get toddlers to eat vegetables. Pair this quick toddler meal with grilled cheese or biscuits. You can get your child involved in this healthy toddler meal by having them chop vegetables or mix up the biscuits. Your toddler can also cut a grilled cheese sandwich into strips to dip into the soup.

Ingredients:

  • Zucchini (2 to 3 small) or 1 large head of broccoli
  • Small piece of carrot and small piece of red pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 an onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  • Invite your child to chop the zucchini into chunks. If using broccoli, chop it into small pieces.
  • Boil the vegetables, including the onion, garlic, and carrot and red pepper (if using) until soft.
  • Strain the vegetables and blend them after removing the excess water.
  • Add the blended vegetables to a pan with the milk and sour cream. Stir until blended, adding salt to taste. Warm the soup to just before boiling.
  • Serve the soup in a cup or a bowl.

4. Avocado Toast

This toddler dinner idea serves up healthy fat and filling whole grains. If your toddler likes deli meat, you can also add a slice of turkey for additional protein. Forget dinner in 30 minutes. You can put this toddler meal idea on the table in as little as 10 minutes!

Ingredients:

  • Whole-wheat bread
  • Avocado
  • Salt
  • Deli meat (optional)

Instructions:

  • Toast the bread
  • Cut open the ripe avocado. Show your toddler how to spoon the avocado out into a bowl and mash it up. Invite them to stir it up into a pasty texture. Add salt to taste.
  • Invite your toddler to spread the avocado on the toast. Add deli meat if desired.

Serve avocado toast alongside some chopped fruit, baked sweet potato fries, or some tomato soup.

5. Scrambled Eggs

One of the easiest toddler meal ideas is scrambled eggs. Many toddlers love eggs, so why not have them for lunch or dinner? You can spice them up by frying up some onion and vegetables with them. Or, serve them plain with ketchup, a toddler classic.

Make this healthy toddler meal even healthier by pairing it with fresh fruit and whole-wheat toast.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs
  • Butter

Instructions:

  • Invite your child to beat an egg or two in a bowl.
  • Add some butter to a frying pan on low heat.
  • When the pan is hot, add the beaten egg. If you feel comfortable, you can supervise your child as they help fry the egg. Otherwise, serve it to your child when it's fully cooked.

Benefits of Recipes for Toddlers

Cooking with your toddler can help them be more willing to try new foods and choose a healthy diet. Along the way, your toddler is sure to also develop their fine motor skills, build their connection with you, and grow in their confidence.
