A Montessori knife is a child-sized kitchen tool designed to help young children safely participate in real food preparation, supporting independence and fine motor skill development. The Piccalio Mini Cutter is made from FSC© beech wood, is finished with edible linseed oil, and is compliant with ASTM F963 and FDA standards. Intentionally designed for little ones, the Mini cutter cuts soft foods like bananas and strawberries, but can’t cut the skin.

A kid-friendly knife is any kitchen knife tool adapted for children—smaller size, safer blade, and made from materials and finishes that are non-toxic and easy to handle. The Mini Cutter is eco-friendly, non-toxic, supports open-ended play and snack preparation. Your little one can use a kid-friendly knife to help with food preparation in the kitchen in a developmentally appropriate way.

Kids can start using Montessori knives around 18 months old, with close supervision. At this age, they can safely practice cutting soft foods, like bananas or cheese. As their coordination improves, they can gradually move to more challenging foods and sharper knives designed for children.

A great choice for toddlers is a small Montessori wooden knife. Its blunt edge and natural wood material make it much safer for little hands while still allowing them to practice real cutting with soft foods. The size is perfect for small grips, helping young children develop fine motor skills and confidence in the kitchen. Plus, wooden knives give children a more grown-up and meaningful experience than plastic alternatives.

The Mini Cutter is made of solid European beech wood and is simple to care for. Clean it using a damp cloth and mild soap. To protect the natural wood, don’t soak it in water. Dry immediately.

Playing should be fun. But also safe. Piccalio products all have a children’s product certificate. They’re non-toxic, FSC©-certified wood, and compliant with ASTM, Prop65, and the FDA, too. We never use harmful chemicals or substances in the making or manufacturing of our products.
