Modern play born of timeless wisdom
Nearly 100 years ago, Hungarian pediatrician Dr. Emmi Pikler created the first Pikler Triangle. She believed that young children were happiest when active and given the chance to explore and develop their gross motor skills.
When creating our version of the climber, we calculated the ideal height, width, dual top rung system and the climbing angle to ensure the best experience.

How to use the Pikler
Babies and toddlers can practice pulling up, standing, and cruising with the Pikler. Older children can climb, slide, and practice more complex skills. Always supervise your little one and follow their lead. Allow them to explore the Pikler Triangle independently without hovering or assisting. They’ll learn their limits through independent exploration.

A truly educational toy
Active play builds not only muscles but brains, too. Why use a Pikler Triangle with your little one? Here are just a few benefits children gain from climbing, according to Education Sciences journal:
- Improved confidence
- Enhanced motor skills
- Spatial judgement
- Developing persistence
- Overcoming fear and risk management
Frequently Asked Questions
Many toddlers naturally seek climbing opportunities—couches, coffee tables, and stairs often become substitutes for safer options. A Pikler triangle provides a structured, developmentally appropriate climbing environment designed specifically for gross motor exploration. Unlike household furniture, a Montessori climbing triangle supports controlled risk-taking, balance development, and spatial awareness in a way that is intentionally engineered for children.
Pikler triangles are safe when they are built with quality materials and used with supervision. The Piccalio Pikler Triangle Set holds certifications such as ASTM and U.S. CPSC, which test children’s toys and furniture against rigorous safety standards. Additionally, our climbing set is Greenguard Gold Certified, a standard that tests for over 10,000 VOCs to ensure the quality of your home’s indoor air.
Always supervise your child when using the Pikler triangle to ensure their safety. You may also consider placing a mat, such as our Play Mat, underneath to create a soft landing.
It’s normal 1 year olds to enjoy climbing on furniture and other objects. At this age, children are focused on building muscles and motor skills. They may still enjoy crawling and climbing is a natural next step to take. From climbing stairs to the couch, it’s normal for toddlers to be on the move, eager to explore their world. You can direct their climbing to safe spaces such as a Pikler Triangle or your local playground.
The weight limit for the Piccalio Triangle Set is 132 lbs (60kg). We recommend our Pikler climbing set for children aged 6 months to 6 years old. However, as long as children don’t exceed the weight limit, they may enjoy climbing on the structure.
Yes. Climbing allows children to test boundaries in a controlled environment. Through repetition, they develop spatial awareness, persistence, and self-regulation. Rather than eliminating risk entirely, a Pikler triangle helps children understand their physical limits—which supports both confidence and safer decision-making over time.
Yes, the Climber Pikler Triangle Set folds for easy storage. To fold, unscrew the locks on either side of the Pikler set and fold the triangle flat.
Yes — when used on a stable surface with supervision. The wide base and engineered stability of a well-built Pikler triangle allow for safe indoor use. For additional peace of mind, many families place a rug or play mat beneath the climber to provide cushioning and reduce slipping during the early stages of climbing.
