Why a Montessori floor bed?
Popular in the Montessori community, a floor bed helps young children sleep independently and safely. Independence at bedtime can boost your child’s self-esteem and prevent accidents. bedBED™ is available in a toddler bed and twin bed sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Transitioning to a floor bed is similar to any change out of a crib or bassinet. One strategy is to set up the floor bed and leave the crib in the room at the same time. Then, ask your child where they want to sleep each night. After about a week of sleeping in the bed, you can remove the crib.
When transitioning to a floor bed, it can also be helpful to have your child practice getting in and out a few times. That way, they can get in and out independently with confidence.
If your child is old enough, you may also work with them to create a morning routine. Should they call for you to open their door? Can they get out and go get you? Should they read a book until you come for them? You can make a chart with pictures that show your child which activities they can do when they get up.
The decision to flip the bed from the floor bed to the big kid BED is a personal decision. Some children are ready when they’re 2 years old, while others may not be ready until they’re 3 or 4 years old. You may consider adding a safety rail when you make this transition so your child won’t roll out of bed.
Both a twin floor bed and a toddler floor bed offer advantages and drawbacks depending on your needs. Choosing the best one for your child and family depends on various factors such as:
How big your child’s bedroom is. A toddler bed is smaller and fits nicely in a small room.
How old your child is. If your child is younger, they’ll have more time to use the toddler bed. Also, if your child is younger, the toddler bed frame may be a better fit than a twin. If your child is older, they will grow out of a toddler bed quickly.
How long you plan on using the bed. Children often outgrow a toddler bed frame’s height and weight limits by the time they are 5 to 6 years old. If you child has younger siblings, the timing might be right for them to get a turn on the toddler bed frame before moving your older child to a twin.
If you choose a twin bed frame, your child can use it for many years, even when they’re all grown up! A twin bed can also serve as a guest bed when needed.
What you already have. Some cribs convert to a toddler bed, meaning you might already have an option that size.
